What we do

Air conditioning on a Tesla does more than keep you comfortable. On heat pump cars it heats the cabin and helps manage the battery, so it is worth keeping in good order.

Regas Refrigerant recharge Systems lose a little refrigerant every year. Bringing it back to spec restores cooling and stops the compressor working harder than it needs to.
Leak test Find the leak first Regassing a leaking system is money straight out the window. We test before we fill, every time.
Filters Cabin and HEPA filters The usual cause of a musty smell, and the cheapest job on this page. Done as part of a service or on their own.
Heat pump Heat pump and valve faults Later cars use a heat pump for cabin heating and battery conditioning. Faults show up as poor heating, poor cooling, or less range in winter.
Smells Odour and mould treatment Evaporator cleaning and a treatment through the system, once the filter has been ruled out as the cause.
Noise Compressor and blower noise Whining, rattling, or a blower that has picked something up. Diagnosed before any parts get ordered.

Why it matters

Air conditioning on an EV is not just comfort

A petrol car heats its cabin with waste engine heat. An electric car has no waste heat worth using, so heating and cooling both come out of the battery, and on later Teslas both run through the same heat pump system.

That means a fault in the climate system shows up as reduced range in winter as well as a cabin that will not warm up. It also means the system runs far more hours than the air conditioning in a petrol car ever did, which is why refrigerant levels and filters are worth staying on top of.

Every model, heat pump cars included. Filters are a quick job, a leak test takes longer, and nothing gets filled until we know where it is going.

Air conditioning questions

Why is my Tesla air conditioning not cold? Most often low refrigerant from a slow leak, sometimes a blocked cabin filter restricting airflow, occasionally a compressor or valve fault. We test the system before topping it up so the gas does not just leak out again.
How often does a Tesla need a regas? There is no fixed interval. Systems lose a small amount of refrigerant each year, so if the cooling is not what it was it is worth testing. On an older car every few years is common.
Why does my Tesla smell when I turn the air conditioning on? Usually the cabin filter, and if not, mould on the evaporator. The filter is quick and cheap to change. If the smell survives a new filter we clean and treat the evaporator.
How often should the cabin filter be replaced? Every couple of years for the standard cabin filter, and at a longer interval for the HEPA filter on cars fitted with one. It is included in a service when it falls due.
Can you fix a heat pump fault outside Tesla? Yes. Heat pump systems on later cars handle both cabin heating and battery conditioning, and faults there affect winter range as well as comfort. We diagnose the system rather than guessing at parts.
