Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so Tesla brakes rarely wear out. They corrode instead. Seized calipers, rusted discs and glazed pads are the most common brake fault we see, and the most common reason a Tesla fails its WOF.

Less wear does not mean less maintenance. Brakes that sit unused need cleaning, lubricating and checking more often than brakes that get worked hard.

Lift off the accelerator in a Tesla and the motor slows the car, recovering energy as it goes. The friction brakes only come in when you brake hard or at very low speed, so a set of pads can last well past 100,000 km.
The problem is that unused brakes rust. Corrosion builds on the disc face, pads glaze, and caliper slides seize because nothing ever moves them. Auckland humidity does not help, and on a car that mostly does short trips it can happen inside a year.
Caught early it is a clean and lubricate. Left alone it is discs, pads and a caliper. It is the same story on every model, which is why we look at the brakes every time a car is here.
