A door that stops halfway, a car that sags overnight, or a clunk from the front end. The X carries the most complicated hardware Tesla has built, and nearly all of what goes wrong with it is mechanical rather than mysterious.

What it's doing

Model X faults, and what usually causes them

Falcon wing doors and air suspension account for most Model X work, with the front end behind them. What the car does, and when it does it, narrows things down quickly. None of this replaces putting it on a hoist, but it tells you what you're likely dealing with.

Door stops halfway or will not close Falcon wing door actuators The door hesitates, reverses, or refuses the last few centimetres. Usually a worn actuator or a strut that has lost its pressure.
Door reversing for no reason Door sensors and pinch protection The sensors read an obstacle that is not there. Often shows up after a panel has been disturbed or a seal has swollen.
Water in the boot or headlining Door seals and drains Blocked drains and tired seals let water in around the door aperture. Worth catching before it reaches the trim.
Sagging overnight Air struts and air lines The car sits low on one corner after a night parked. A leaking strut or line, and the compressor works itself hard trying to keep up.
Clunk over bumps Front upper control arms A single clunk from the front over expansion joints and speed bumps. Shared with the Model S, and the first thing we look at when the noise is up front.

Why Model X tyres wear unevenly

Uneven wear is a geometry problem, not a tyre problem. Two and a half tonnes with instant torque is unforgiving of camber and toe that have drifted out of spec — and worn suspension components move that geometry as they go. Replace the tyres without correcting the alignment and the new set wears the same way.

Air suspension adds a step. Ride height and alignment are tied together, so a car that isn't sitting where it thinks it is won't hold an alignment either. We check ride height and the air system before we touch the geometry.

We fit EV-rated tyres and align in-house, so it's one visit rather than two.

Model X questions we get asked

Why will my Model X falcon wing door not close properly? Usually the actuator or the strut that drives it, and sometimes the sensors that watch for obstacles. A door that hesitates or stops in the same place every time points at the hardware; a door that reverses at random points at the sensors. Both are repairable.
Can you repair falcon wing doors outside of Tesla? Yes. Actuators, struts, sensors, seals and door alignment are all work we do here. You choose genuine Tesla parts or quality aftermarket, and we tell you the difference before you decide.
Why does my Model X sag overnight? A leak somewhere in the air suspension — usually a strut, sometimes a line or a valve block. The compressor keeps the car up while you are driving and loses the fight while it is parked. Left alone, the compressor is normally the next thing to fail.
Where is the water in my boot coming from? Most often the drains around the falcon wing door aperture and the seals that sit in it. Once the drains block, water finds the next lowest point, which is usually the boot floor or the headlining. It is a cheap fix early and an expensive one late.
What does it cost to find out what is wrong? Nothing. Bring it in, we put it on the hoist and tell you what we find. Any work is quoted before it starts.
