Tesla tyres and wheel alignment in Auckland

Teslas are hard on tyres. Two tonnes, instant torque and geometry that drifts as bushes wear will take the inside edge off a front tyre long before the middle is gone. We fit EV-rated tyres and align in-house, so it is one visit rather than two.

Tyres and geometry

What we do

Fitting, balancing, alignment, and the diagnosis that explains why the last set wore out early. Every model, and every one of them heavy enough to need the geometry checked properly.

Fitting EV-rated tyres A tyre built for the weight, the torque and the quiet. Cheap tyres on a Tesla are loud, wear fast and cost more over their life than the right ones did.
Balancing Road force balancing Vibration at speed is usually balance or the tyre itself. Road force finds the tyres that will never balance out no matter how much weight goes on the rim.
Alignment Four-wheel alignment, printed Camber, caster and toe set to Tesla spec, with a printout before and after so you can see exactly what moved.
Diagnosis Why the last set wore out Worn bushes, control arms and links move the geometry as they wear. Aligning a car with worn parts buys you a few months, not a few years.
Rotation Rotation and pressures Done on wear rather than on a date. Included in a service and worth doing between them if the car covers a lot of kilometres.
Repairs Punctures and wheel damage Repaired where it is safe to repair and replaced where it is not. We will tell you which one you are looking at.

Wearing tyres faster than you should?

Bring it in and we will measure the geometry and check the front end before you spend money on rubber.

Inside-edge wear

Why Tesla tyres wear on the inside edge

Inside-edge wear is a geometry problem, not a tyre problem. Camber and toe drift out of spec as the car covers kilometres, and a heavy car with instant torque punishes that drift far faster than a petrol hatchback would.

Worn suspension parts make it worse. Compliance arm bushes, control arms and links all let the wheel move further than it should, and the alignment moves with them. Fit new tyres without fixing the cause and the next set wears exactly the same way.

So we check the front end before we align, and align before you buy tyres. Model S and Model X add ride height to the equation, because air suspension and alignment are tied together.

Tyre and alignment questions

Why are my Tesla tyres wearing on the inside edge? Wheel geometry that has drifted out of spec, usually camber and toe, made worse by worn suspension bushes and arms. It is the single most common tyre complaint we see across every model.
How often should a Tesla have a wheel alignment? At least once a year, whenever you fit new tyres, and any time the car has hit a pothole hard or the steering feels different than it did.
What tyres should I put on my Tesla? An EV-rated tyre in the size and load rating the car was built for. They are made for the weight and the torque, and they are quieter, which matters more in a car with no engine noise to hide behind.
Can you fix vibration at speed? Usually. It is most often wheel balance or the tyre itself, sometimes a buckled rim, and occasionally worn suspension letting the wheel move. We check balance and the front end together rather than guessing.
Do you align Model S and Model X with air suspension? Yes. Ride height and alignment are linked on an air-sprung car, so we check the air system and set ride height first, then align.

Got a realistic quote quickly and no problem getting booked in for work. No problem getting a courtesy car. The price was same as quote. Great.
