Available on any Tesla after an inspection, including imports with no factory warranty.

Why cover

The parts that make cover worth having

A Tesla has fewer moving parts than a petrol car, but the parts it does have are expensive. These are the ones that turn into a real bill once the warranty has gone. What your policy covers depends on the policy and the car, and we go through that with you before anything is signed.

High voltage The traction battery The most expensive single part on the car, and the one owners worry about most. Autosure treats it like any other covered component rather than carving it out.
Drivetrain Drive units and reduction gears Motor and gearing faults are not common, but they are not cheap either. A whine under power or a clunk on take-up is worth having looked at while cover is in place.
Suspension Air struts and compressors On a Model S or Model X, a leaking strut usually takes the compressor with it. Two parts, one fault, and a bill that surprises people.
Model X Falcon wing door hardware Actuators, struts and sensors. It is the most complicated hardware on any Tesla and the least forgiving to repair out of pocket.
Climate Heat pump and air conditioning The same system heats the cabin and conditions the battery, so a fault costs you winter range as well as comfort.
Electrical Chargers and control modules Onboard chargers, control units and the low voltage system everything else depends on. Electronics are where a modern car quietly gets expensive.

Out of warranty

The repair bill after the warranty ends

A Tesla under factory warranty is somebody else’s problem. The day that warranty expires, every fault on the car becomes yours, and Tesla parts do not get cheaper with age. A drive unit, an air suspension strut or a high voltage battery is the kind of bill that arrives without warning and does not negotiate.

Imported Teslas are in the same position from the day they land, because a used import usually arrives with no factory warranty at all. The car might be in good order and have plenty of life left in it, but there is nothing standing behind it if something lets go.

Mechanical breakdown insurance fills that gap. You pay a known amount instead of carrying an unknown one, and the repair happens here rather than wherever the insurer sends you.

How it works

Arranged here, claimed here, repaired here

We are an Autosure agent, so cover is arranged in the workshop rather than over a call centre. You can take out a policy at any time — the car needs an inspection first, which we do here, and that inspection tells you the condition of the car whether you take cover or not.

When something does fail, you bring the car to us. We diagnose it, deal with Autosure directly and get the authorisation. You are not the one chasing an insurer while your car sits on a hoist.

Autosure Insurance

Autosure has insured New Zealand vehicles for decades and is one of the country's best known mechanical breakdown insurers. We arrange their cover as an appointed agent.

Any time Inspection first
HV battery Covered like any part
Three steps
One Inspection We put the car on a hoist and check its condition. That is what Autosure needs before cover starts, and it tells you what shape the car is in either way.
Two Cover arranged We go through what is covered, the term, the limits and the excess, and arrange the policy here. No call centre and no waiting on a quote in the post.
Three A claim, if you need one Bring the car in. We diagnose the fault, deal with Autosure directly for authorisation, and do the repair. You are not the one on the phone.

Who it suits

Teslas past their factory warranty, used imports that never had one, and anyone keeping a car long enough that something will eventually need doing. It also suits owners of a Model S or Model X, where air suspension and door hardware make an unlucky year expensive.

What we will tell you honestly

What is covered, what is not, and what the excess is, before you decide. Cover, limits and exclusions depend on the policy and the vehicle, and we would rather you knew that up front than found out at claim time.

Insurance questions

Does Autosure cover the high voltage battery on a Tesla? Yes. The traction battery is treated like any other component on the car rather than excluded. Since it is the most expensive part of a Tesla, that is usually the deciding factor for owners weighing up whether cover is worth it. We will confirm the detail against the policy before you sign anything.
Can I get cover on a Tesla that is already out of warranty? Yes, and that is who mechanical breakdown insurance is for. The car needs an inspection first so its condition is on record, and we do that here. Existing faults are not covered, so the sooner the car is inspected the better the position you are in.
Can I insure an imported Tesla with no factory warranty? Yes. Used imports typically arrive with no manufacturer warranty at all, which makes them one of the strongest cases for cover. Same process: inspection first, then we arrange the policy.
When can I take out cover? Any time. There is no window you have to catch, but the car has to pass an inspection before cover begins, and anything already wrong with it will not be covered.
Do I have to use Tesla for repairs if I have Autosure? No. Repairs happen here in Penrose. We diagnose the fault, deal with Autosure for the authorisation and get on with the work.
How does a claim actually work? You bring the car in and tell us what it is doing. We find the fault, contact Autosure with the diagnosis, get authorisation and repair it. You pay the excess, we handle the rest of the paperwork.
What is not covered? Wear and tear items, servicing, tyres, brake pads, existing faults and anything the inspection flagged before cover started. Every policy has limits and exclusions, and we go through yours with you rather than leaving you to find them in the wording.
★★★★★
I had a fantastic experience at GVI Service Centre when they fixed the rear seat cable in my 3rd row seat. The team went above and beyond by coordinating with Autosure (extended Warranty) to streamline the process. They even provided a courtesy vehicle that was tidy and clean, making everything so convenient. Highly recommend their services!
