How often A WOF is every 12 months, and a new Tesla does not need its first until its third birthday. A COF A runs six-monthly.

What gets checked on a Tesla WOF

A WOF is the same legal inspection for an electric car as it is for anything else, minus the parts a Tesla does not have. These are the areas that decide it, and where Teslas most often come unstuck.

Tyres Tread depth, condition and wear pattern Under 1.5 mm anywhere across the tread is a fail. Heavy EVs wear the inside edge first, which is the part you cannot see without turning the wheel.
Brakes Pads, discs and handbrake performance Regen braking means the friction brakes do very little work, so they corrode rather than wear. Seized calipers and rusted discs are the most common Tesla fail we see.
Suspension and steering Bushes, ball joints and shock absorbers Play in the front end is a fail. On a 3 or Y that is usually the upper control arms; on an S or X, the air struts.
Lights and glazing Headlights, indicators, windscreen and wipers A chip in the driver's line of sight fails, and so does a wiper blade that no longer clears the glass.
Structure and body Rust, doors, mirrors and seatbelts Structural rust in the wrong place is a fail. Seatbelts have to latch, retract and be free of damage.
Not part of a WOF No emissions test on an electric car No exhaust, no emissions, no fuel system. The high voltage battery is not part of a WOF either — we check its health separately if you want it.

Why Teslas fail their WOF

Two things account for most Tesla WOF failures, and both come from how the car drives rather than how it is built. Regenerative braking does nearly all the slowing, so the friction brakes sit largely unused and corrode instead of wearing. Discs rust, pads glaze, calipers seize — and a brake that cannot be proved to work is a fail.

The second is tyres. A Model 3 is around 1,850 kg and a Model X closer to 2,500, and that weight with instant torque wears the inside edge of the front tyres long before the middle. Tread under 1.5 mm anywhere across the tyre is a fail, and the inside edge is the part you cannot see from the kerb.

We check both first, so if there is a problem you hear about it with time to decide rather than as a failed sheet.

Certificate of fitness

COF A inspections for working Teslas

If your Tesla earns its keep, a warrant of fitness is not enough. Vehicles carrying paying passengers or out on hire need a certificate of fitness — COF A — and it runs on a six-monthly cycle rather than an annual one.

We do COF A inspections here in Penrose, on the same site and the same hoists as everything else. Book a time and wait, or leave the car with us. If something needs putting right you get a quote before it happens, and the re-check happens here rather than somewhere else.

Ride share Teslas Uber, Ola and other passenger service work. Six-monthly COF A, and we know what the inspection is looking for on a high-kilometre car.
Rental Teslas Fleet or single vehicle. We can schedule inspections around your booking calendar so the car is off the road for as little as possible.
Lease Teslas Lease and novated lease vehicles that fall under COF requirements, inspected and documented for whoever holds the paperwork.

Tesla WOF and COF questions

Do electric cars need a WOF in New Zealand? Yes. An EV needs a warrant of fitness on the same schedule as any other vehicle. The only difference is what gets inspected: there is no exhaust or emissions component, so the inspection covers tyres, brakes, steering and suspension, lights, glazing, structure, seatbelts and the rest of the standard checklist.
Do I need a WOF or a COF for my Tesla? A privately used Tesla needs a warrant of fitness. A Tesla carrying paying passengers, out on hire, or otherwise working for a living needs a certificate of fitness instead — COF A for a light vehicle. If you drive for Uber or Ola, run a rental car, or hold a lease that specifies it, COF is the one you need. Ask us if you are not sure which applies.
Do you do COF A inspections for ride share and rental Teslas? Yes. We do COF A inspections here in Penrose for ride share, rental and lease Teslas.
